1st Grade News ~ 5/8/17

My 1st grade friends at the end of a wonderful Teacher Appreciation Week:

1st Grade News

To go along with Mcgraw-Hill WONDERS reading unit "How do things get built?', we designed and built aluminum foil boats.  Students predicted how many pennies boats would hold before sinking.  One of the children created a super simple design that held over 120 pennies before sinking.  Others discovered they had to redesign and improve original boats and try again.

The creators of these little characters are looking forward to second grade!  Today's magic number is 16...

1st Grade News ~ 5/1/17

1st graders love geometry!  Besides the fun projects, they have many opportunities to see math in their everyday lives. Suddenly, a tissue box becomes a rectangular prism or cube and the globe is no longer a globe; it's a sphere.

We engaged in several fun, hands-on activities. We created 2D creatures, fraction creatures and 3D rainsticks:

3D Rainsticks and Writing

This wonderful writer filled up the backside of his journal paper with details on how to make a rainstick.

Another thing 1st graders love...to hear the weather!  The rainsticks were a huge hit!
