MLK, Jr. Day

The children worked very hard to create these writings that reflect their warm, loving hearts and unique qualities. 
 

 

 


































 



 

Writing

News of the Nor'Easter 2015 reminded me of a writing activity the children worked on a few weeks ago.  This was an opinion writing, and the children chose either a 'frightful' or 'delightful' point of view.  You'll notice, we are a class who loves the snow.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 








Common Core writing standard:

W. 1.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book
they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the
opinion, and provide some sense of closure.
 
Our pre-writing activity included conversations with peers about past experiences with winter weather.  We also created a diagram and sorted activities into the two categories - frightful and delightful.
 
 
I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping the snow that's expected to fall this coming week will provide delight, not fright to those affected.
 
 
 
 
 

Groundhog Day 2015








 
We're working on informational text and narrative writings this week.  I plan to have the kiddos use this writing paper for one of the narrative writing activities.

In my classroom, students are featured on the author's chair to share weekend journal writings as well as other topics of choice.  The children also share their writings with partners many times throughout the week but author's chair is a favorite for most of the students.  In these pictures, you can see how the audience enthusiastically lends their undivided attention. 
 
After the author finishes reading, we make time for questions and feedback.  We're just beginning the process of providing comments and suggestions (a delicate process.)
