Read to Someone Center

On the second day of school, our first graders brought favorite books from home to school.  It was exciting to see the wide variety of books from the children’s home libraries.  Our classroom goal during center rotations is for the children to develop independence while working at their individual pace and reading level.  When I introduced the “read to someone” center, it was my hope the children would read for 5 minutes, but this group of enthusiastic readers read for 15 minutes!  We still have a lot of work to do to get all children reading texts appropriate to their developmental levels, but what a great start, and how thrilling to see these students already have the skills and interest to work independently!

August 26, 2013 Classroom Newsletter

At the beginning of the school year, we always expect a few glitches, such as forgotten lunches or missing snacks; I never expected what happened on the first day of school this year, however.  At 8:30am, just 40 minutes before the school day began; we had another student added to our class roster. In need of the basics and the things that mean so much to a child on his/her first day of school - a desk, a chair, a locker space, a name tag - but very little time to get organized, I wasn’t sure the classroom would be set up in time.  Thanks to my truly wonderful first grade team and our building custodian, we were able to gather what was needed and welcome our new student at 9:10am, along with 24 other students.  (smile) We’re now a class of 25 - 13 boys and 12 girls. I have to applaud the children who attended Highland Drive last year because they did a marvelous job of welcoming the 6 students in our class who are new to our district and school.

On the second day of school, the children brought their favorite book to share and on the third day, their favorite stuffed friend.  I snapped this picture in front of our building.  This is a colorful, energetic, kind group of first graders!

The first newsletter of the 2013-2014 school year:

First Day of School!

Our "Meet the Teacher" was yesterday.  It was GREAT visiting with my new students and their families!  The visits (and hugs) from former students made the evening super special indeed!  Not too long ago, I saw this former student and her sisters at the rec center.  They stopped by last night and were ALL smiles about the upcoming school year.  :)

Our classroom floors were waxed just last week and the hallway was done over the weekend.  Needless to say, we were super busy yesterday getting things ready for Meet the Teacher and the new school year at the last minute.

With just a few more things to get organized, Room 6 is ready to welcome 24 new students tomorrow!

The WORD WALL!
The 40 words from the WONDERS kindergarten list are displayed on the Word Wall below the Phonics Dance Alphabet Cards.

We will have 4 table groups, 6 students in each group.
The shelf by the window is filled with special books for the beginning of the year.

The Classroom Library and Writing Center

I am thrilled to have a new, portable book cart this year!  It's filled with leveled readers and BIG books.  This is where we'll gather for large-group instruction and the children will use this space for center activities as well.

As you can see, our read-alouds for the First Day of School will be The Kissing Hand and Splat the Cat!

The children will write about summer fun and I'll get a glimpse of handwriting, spelling, and writing abilities.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a great first day for all students.  :)
