A HUGE thank you to this kind (and beautiful) family for providing popsicles to our students!  Our classroom temperature reached 86^ in the afternoon so this surprise treat was really appreciated!

Don't you just love how kids maintain their enthusiasm and beautiful smiles,
despite the heat and humidity!

D.A.R.E.

We finished up our three-session D.A.R.E. program on Tuesday.
The DARE program focuses on safety, stranger danger, accurate information about alcohol and drugs, and developing a positive relationship between police officers and children.

In this picture, our line leader chose several friends to help out with a role-playing activity.

My Country Tis of Thee

I uploaded a 36 second video to You Tube of the children singing My Country Tis of Thee

I hope you and your families enjoy a safe, happy Memorial Day weekend!

Butterflies!

Our first grade team purchased butterfly habitats and kits.  We have six active caterpillar in our classroom habitat that are busy eating and preparing for the next stage.  We'll be able to release our butterflies into Highland Island the last week of school!

With this project, the children are learning to "wonder and think".  They are asking questions, observing, gathering information, reflecting and making predictions.  In their journals, the children are illustrating, explaining, and recording data.

Throughout the day, the children gather near the habitat and communicate about their discoveries.  They're having fun naming each caterpillar and can't wait for the final stage of the cycle!

Busy BEES!

You Tube Link for Busy Buzzy BEES http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xofRPH_Mv44
When the children read the Harcourt story, Busy Buzzy BEES, we did a little extra research and discovered some fascinating facts about bees.  The children learned that honeybees in each hive have their own unique scent and use that special scent to communicate and identify members of their hive.
That led to an experiment:  the children had to locate members of their "colony" by scent.  They made bees out of craft paper and while the students were out of the classroom, I scented each bee, using 4 different scents.  When the children returned to the classroom, they walked amongst friends, and using just their sense of smell, they had to locate others in their "hive" with their same scent.
I uploaded the adorable video of our science experiment to You Tube.  I made the You Tube setting 'unlisted', so only someone with the link can view it.
I hope you enjoy the video!

May 27, 2013 Newsletter

Well, I learned a very important lesson recently...it's important to install updates on your PC.  I've been out of commission for several weeks, but hopefully my PC issues are behind me for now.

I'm uploading the newsletter for next week a little early.
